The most western point of Europe’s most westerly country.

Cabo da Roca (Cape Roca) is a cape which forms the westernmost extent of mainland Portugal and continental Europe. The cape is in the Portuguese municipality of Sintra within the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, 42 kilometres from Lisbon,18 kilometres from Sintra and 15 kilometres from Cascais.
The 16th century Portuguese poet Luís de Camões described Cabo da Roca as the place “where the land ends and the sea begins”, in “Os Lusíadas, Canto III“:

“Here, almost top of head
Throughout Europe the Kingdom Lusitano,
Where the land ends and the sea begins
And where Phoebus in the Ocean lies. ”

O Cabo da Roca é o ponto mais ocidental de Portugal continental, assim como da Europa continental. Situa-se na freguesia de Colares, concelho de Sintra e distrito de Lisboa.
Luís Vaz de Camões descreveu-o como o local “Onde a terra se acaba e o mar começa”, in Os Lusíadas, Canto III:
“Eis aqui, quase cume da cabeça
De Europa toda, o Reino Lusitano,
Onde a terra se acaba e o mar começa
E onde Febo repousa no Oceano.”
