The Polyptych of the Convent of Madre de Deus

The Polyptych is a set of oil Paintings on oak wood, painted around 1515, in Jorge Afonso’s workshop,

and that was intended to decorate the main chapel of the Convent of Madre de Deus.

The original constitution of the Polyptych is unknown. The seven surviving panels, or eight depending on the versions, are:

Annunciation, Adoration of the Shepherds, Adoration of the Magi, Apparition of Christ to the Virgin, Ascension of Christ, Pentecost and Assumption of the Virgin.

This work by the painter can be found in the National Museum of Ancient Art, Lisbon.

O Políptico do Convento da Madre de Deus

‘E um conjunto de pinturas a óleo sobre madeira de carvalho, pintadas cerca de 1515, na oficina de Jorge Afonso,

e que se destinou a decorar a Capela-mor do Convento da Madre de Deus.

Não se conhece a constituição original do Políptico. Os sete painéis sobreviventes, ou oito conforme as versões, são:

Anunciação, Adoração dos Pastores, Adoração dos Reis Magos, Aparição de Cristo à Virgem, Ascensão de Cristo, Pentecostes e Assunção da Virgem.

Esta obra do pintor encontra-se no Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga, Lisboa.
